Horses are often warm-blooded mammals. Some are "thoroughbreds", a term used to describe those that are fine, lively and nervous. Most powerful and muscular draught horses are cold-blooded. They are renowned for their strength, calm and patience, physical qualities that are essential for carrying heavy weights. These horses were known as "gentle giants". Role in the ecosystem
Horse dung is a natural fertiliser. Nowadays, we have to be careful with the chemical dewormers we use, particularly those containing ivermectin, because these products, when administered to the horse, are eliminated in the dung and kill the insects that bury the dung beetles in the soil to make an effective fertiliser. Without these insects, the dung would remain on the surface of the soil instead of being reintegrated into it, which would be costly for the environment!
