Known for its legendary slowness, the sloth, slower than the tortoise, spends most of its time with its body suspended under a branch.

Role in the ecosystem
This may come as a surprise, but the sloth's hair is an ecosystem in itself, supporting not only the sloth, but also butterflies and insects! In fact, its texture retains rainwater, which in turn enables the development of an algae that the sloth feeds on by licking itself. This algae produces carbohydrates and lipids, but needs nitrogen to develop, and this is where the butterflies come in, providing it by defecating on the animal. These same butterflies, as well as insects, lay eggs on the sloth's excrement to feed their larvae. It's a win-win situation!

Why is this species endangered?
Every time it moves, the sloth risks his life. That's why it only comes down from its tree once a week to relieve itself. Today, among the 6 species of sloths, 2 are in the process of extinction.

The causes of this drama are linked to global warming, but also to deforestation and the development of roads, because of which the sloths can no longer camouflage themselves and are run over by cars or attacked by dogs.
