In Africa, elephants are revered by the peoples with whom they live, giving them a strong cultural significance. When they eat in the forest, they create holes in the vegetation that allow new plants to grow, providing passageways for smaller species. Some animals depend entirely on elephants to disperse their seeds, and wherever they live, elephants leave droppings full of the seeds of the many plants they eat. Once the dung has been deposited, the seeds are sown and grow into vegetation, improving the health of the savannah ecosystem.
