Otters are carnivorous mammals. Most species live only in freshwater, with the exception of the sea otter, which prefers saltwater. Otters feed mainly on fish. When diving, otters lose their sense of smell and hearing, which handicaps their hunting. However, equipped with vibrissae (stiff whiskers), it can feel ripples and thus perceive different rippling fish. The otter also has very dense fur, enabling it to protect itself from the cold and float more easily to keep its snout out of the water.

Why is this species endangered?
The otter is experiencing a sharp decline over almost its entire range. Its range has been reduced by hunting and trapping, as its fur is particularly sought-after. In the Netherlands, radio collar monitoring has been introduced. Otters are also victims of water pollution and the reduction of wetlands.

Role in the ecosystem
Otters play a very important role in curbing global warming. Otters are already known for conserving a rich and diverse marine environment, helping to propagate and protect the brown macroalgae that cover the oceans. CO2 emissions are reduced by 10% in a world populated by otters. Algae enrich our oceans and our environment by fighting global warming. Only otters with their predatory instincts can reduce the spread of sea urchins, which feed on algae.
