Its name comes from a French derivative: choue. Owls mainly hunt small mammals, although some species specialise in fishing.

Why is this species endangered?
In urban landscapes, a large proportion of nocturnal birds of prey have disappeared from a significant part of their natural range. Built-up areas and roadsides have become "ecological traps" for them. Owls are sensitive to bioaccumulation and in particular to certain pollutants such as pesticides, which are used to control mammals.
